Course Goals
This semester, students will complete five units of study. Grammar and Literacy Skills will be addressed in each unit of study.
Literacy and Short Stories
Learning Goals: By the end of this unit, students are expected to confidently analyze a text for the elements of fiction taught in class. They should also be able to reflect on the reading strategies they use when analyzing literature for the purpose of making inferences, and they should be aware of the strategies they use when answering multiple choice questions. Finally, students should be able to write proper full sentence responses and paragraphs to suit various purposes and target audiences.
Success Criteria: Students will be provided with opportunities to receive written and oral feedback from the teacher prior to completing summative activities. Students will be given rubrics and exemplars for all summative assignments.
Dramatic Study- "Romeo and Juliet"
Learning Goals: Students will apply research skills to the creation of a museum exhibit, which will be presented to classmates and an authentic audience. Students will also strengthen critical literacy skills by reading, acting and writing from the perspective of one chosen character from "Romeo and Juliet". Students will apply proper MLA structure to a literary essay.
Success Criteria: Students will write a blog (using Google sites) or in-class twitter (using Edmodo) to demonstrate their creative understanding of the characters, plot, setting and conflicts within the play. They will write a test and a literary essay. Rubrics and exemplars will be provided.
Novel Study - Hunger Games
Learning Goals: Students will be expected to successfully analyze the characters, conflict and themes within this text in order to gain a better understanding for how narratives reflect and shape our world.
Success Criteria: Students will complete a multiple choice and short answer tests, a literary essay, a newspaper article and, if time permits, they will express their views orally during a class debate. Rubrics and exemplars will be provided.
Students will complete a rich summative task and an exam at the end of this semester.
